Hi all, Using windows 7, I have a persistent problem connecting to the Internet. When I try to connect to my router (wifi), I get 'Network Security Key Mismatch' after entering the password for my connection.

1. Vodafone Wifi Problem

I am 100% positive that I am typing the password correctly. I have tried manually creating the network connection, so I can specify the security type, etc. I get the same result. I can connect to my neighbours unprotected wifi, so I know the hardware and drivers are functional. The problem is only when I connect to my router (linksys).

If I put my HDD with Windows Vista back into the machine, it connects without difficulty. Does this imply that the thread you linked to doesn't apply to me? Forgive my ignorance! To clarify, I have a laptop, with the original HDD in, I can connect fine. When I swap the HDD to a new one which has my Windows 7 installation on it, I get asked for the security key over and over.

Nik, Have you tried to manually configure the wireless connection? Open the Network and Sharing Center 2. In the left pane click Manage Wireless Networks 3. In the list of networks right click your wireless network and click Properties 4.

Click the Security tab and check its settings I have seen a number of times that WPA was chosen instead of WPA2 or that TKIP was chosen instead of AES encryption. Ensure the settings here resemble the security settings on your access point. I hope this fixes your connection issues. In my case, what happened is my D-link router suddenly couldn't find a network connection, so I phoned them and they had me change from WEP to WPA2, and delete and recreate the name for my network. This worked fine on my Windows XP PC, but my laptop (Windows 7) will not connect to this same (new) wireless connection, and I get the same msg of Key Mismatch. When I try to add/create a new wireless connection to match the new settings, it just puts an 'X' in the box showing all available connections, and says it does not match the settings of the one I just created!

If I try a different setting (say, WEP or WPA2 with TKIP, even though I know this is not correct) it accepts it, but then I get the Key Mismatch every time I try to connect. I managed to the problem fixed by calling D-link and working it through with them (they are still supporting the product for free, even though I bought it several months ago, so kudos to them). Vodafone Wifi Problem

I made it a WEP code with 10 x 0 as password, couldn't type that wrong, right? Tried a couple devices on this network, worked just great. However, the Toshiba just would not work.

What I did was putting the wireless settings of another notebook, on which the network worked fine, on a flashdrive. I then installed these on the Tosiba and it would connect just fine. So many suggestions here! Yet none of them worked for me! Lol I managed to fix my problem though. I am on Windows 7 and it works fine on ALL networks I have ever connected to except an old wireless access point I have just started using at home. It only has WEP for encryption and I used 128bit.

Under this, I could use manual hex key, the routers stringed passphrase, ASCII or a normal passphrase. I tried normal passphrase first but my computer would reject the passphrase I had configured in the router! For some reason it would only accept 'admin' but the result was limited connectivity.

I would reset the access point after each reconfiguration (through the configuration page, not physically). I solved my problem by using ASCII and having to use a 13 character key (that's annoying!) but hey, my computer didnt reject the passphrase and it has full connectivity now =). I have the same problem but trying to connect to a range extender. I enter the correct WEP key but it still says there's a mismatch. I went to Manage Wireless Networks.

It turned out it didn't show any security for that device. I entered a WEP Key, which is the same for the original wireless router, but it still says there's a possible mismatch. Should I configure the range extender with a different key password than the router?

Should I change the range ext. From WEP to WAP or whatever other options there are? It has taken me many hours just to make the range ext. Now that I was able to configure it correctly with my XP machine, my Windows 7 is still making things difficult. Any suggestions?

For those who are still struggling with this issue.this is how i got around it. I am using Lynksys Wireless-G, my security settings are WEP. I struggled with this for over 2 weeks, i read all manuals and googled everywhere but nothing was of help untill this morning. It looks strange but i understand now thta it is not.

Step 5,6,7 and 12 are the most important. connect your laptop to your wireless router with ethernet cord(ensure proxy server IP add is not set).

go into the router settings normally you may be required to enter your credentials. go in to the wirelss security settings. enter your passphrase.

important: click on 'generate' button and about 4 security keys will be generated. copy one of these generated keys. save and apply and exit this window. Goto network and sharing center. select 'Manage wireless networks'. delete any network reference listed that may conflict with the network you are connecting to.

exit the window. now with that that try reconnecting and when prompted for passphrase or security key paste the generated key that you copied from step 6 above. then shout bingo.you should be home and try. My wireless was working fine, but seemed slow, so I tried to go in and improve my router security. I kind of bumbled around, not exactly sure what I was doing, and afterwards I got the security key mismatch message. How do I fix that??:O This is so simple I hope it will work for you. The security key you type in at the wireless connection prompt is NOT the password you use to access your router. THis drove me crazy!

The correct network security key is the 'WPA Shared Key' from your router's wireless settings. To find this key, log into your router's home page. I use Linksys so hopefully this will be the same for you. From the router home page, click on 'Wireless' tab; click on the subtab 'Wireless Security'. You should see this info: Security Mode: (such as WPA2 Personal) WPA Algorithm: (such as AES) WPA Shared Key: (lots of characters that look random) I copied the string of characters in the WPA Shared Key block. Then when I went to log into the wireless connection, I pasted the string and checked the block for it to remember that entry.

A little less secure, but much easier than having to look up the key every time I want to log in. You should also confirm the settings on your wireless connection match the information from the Wireless Security tab of the router (that stuff I just listed above). To check it, click on 'control panel', then 'Network and Internet', then 'Manage Wireless Network'. Right click on your wireless network, select 'Properties', select the 'Security' tab. 'Network Security Key' must match the router's wireless 'WPA Shared Key' entry. So, a simple problem, I got the router's password confused with the router's WPA Shared Key entry.

Here's how i solved it.went into my router's wireless security settings and changed from WEP to WPA2 Personal -changed from TKIP to TKIP+AES -set to 64bit 10 hex -set password -saved settings after that i was able to connect without a problem. Seems my windows 7 doesnt like WEP at all and prefers AES over TKIP This works for me!! At the beginning I was using a 2-wire-router. Then I changed back to the ATT one. feel bad that my windows 7 (x86) could not connect to the network even I can connect with the same password on my iphone.

I am using a NETGEAR router, and finally try this and connected!!!! Thank god because it keeps saying mismatch. When I do the search, people say use the WEP to generate the Encryption (WEP) Key. No this will not work on win7 (x86).

So try the WPA2 out, will work!! Here is a example I created for you guys, hope that will help! GO TO YOUR NETGEAR IP ADDRESS TO LOGIN. USUALLY THE USER NAME AND PASSWORD WILL BE: ADMIN AND PASSWORD. Hi, i had the same problem and this is how i fixed it. Open Internet Explorer, in the address bar type '192.168.1.1' hit enter. A log in box will appear, type 'admin' as user name and 'admin' as pasword.

This will log you into your modem. Click on.Wireless.then click on.security. Once in security look for 'WPA Pre-Shared Key' beside this it will say 'click here to display' click that and write down the code that it displays. Go back to.control panel.network and internet.network and sharing centre.connect or disconnect. When the box appears to enter your security key, enter the code that you wrote down (in my case it was a different code to what was on the bottom of the modem). Close everything and restart the computer.Happy surfing:).

I know Zzubnik doesn't need help anymore:) but I would like to post what fixed this issue for me. I have Gateway laptop, running Windows 7. I have an Arris modem/router from TW Cable. I've had this laptop for years and this new router for a few months with no issues. I have several devices (iphones, android, kindle, surface, HP laptop and Gateway laptop, smart TV's, media players etc) that have been connecting without any issues- before and during this ordeal.

What happened? Well one night I used my laptop, went to bed, woke up and it no longer connected to my home wifi.

I can click on the available networks and there are MANY listed (including my home network) I select it enter my password but it keeps giving me Network Security Mismatch or Unable to connect to network error. Keep in mind- I haven't changed a single thing and of course I know my password- its been the same for years!

I did all the obvious 1. Made sure the wifi key was on (in case you don't know this is most likely an F1 or F2 key on your keyboard and you should see the wifi arches light up somewhere on your keyboard - well at least that is how it is on Gateway laptop) and yes my wifi was on the arches were lit- but to be safe I pushed the F2 button to disconnect and then pushed it again to reconnect. I rebooted my wireless router (did this for several minutes, actually once I even left it unplugged overnight!) still nothing. I pressed the signal key on the router.

Then entered my password again. I even tried holding the signal button down in order to bypass the password option as others suggested but this did not work for me.

After reading lots of boards I did the following 4. I went to my Control Panel - Network/Sharing Center - Manage wireless networks - I highlighted my network and clicked on Remove. I then went back to the bottom right of my screen to add my home network again.

Of course it asked for my password, I entered my password again. Unfortunately. still nothing- same Network Security Key Mismatch. Then I went back to Network Sharing Center and this time I clicked on Change adapter settings. I clicked on my network- then above I clicked on the Disable button to disable the network device.

I then clicked on enable. Went back down to connect to my network, entered password but nothing. Still same error. I then tried to connect using the default password on the side of my router, tried MANY times to enter my regular password being extra careful and making sure I was entering it right. But nothing. I mean who was i kidding? I know my freaking password!! Desperate I decided to do a destructive restore on my laptop - putting it back to factory settings! I thought maybe something got corrupt and I hoped that a restore would fix it.

Nothing worked. I then started to think my laptop could no longer connect to wifi.

As a final resort I took it work to test it. (You can also do this by going to Starbucks etc) well I was able to connect to my network at work.

I thought yes it fixed itself! BUT then I came home today only to discover that it still didn't connect to my home network! So I know knew it wasn't an issue with my laptop (because it did connect to other networks- just not my home network) BUT it wasn't my wifi router at home either (because ALL other devices were still connecting fine) - it was specific to my laptop connecting to my home wifi.

So I kept googling to find an answer. Finally I did something that seemed too simple (actually something I tried previously but it confused me so I gave up when I couldn't understand it) But this SOLVED MY PROBLEM so I want to share in case someone else is confused.

I read somewhere that sometimes this NETWORK SECURITY KEY ERROR happens when there is a conflicting IP address. (well if you are like me you are thinking 'no dummy that's not it I have been connecting fine for days, weeks, months, years, etc. How is my IP address going to change all of a sudden?'

(side note- I still don't understand how or why. But I think it has to do something with several devices being on the same network and sometimes the network gets a bit confused. Or something like that. Lol) anyway I fought against my instinct of trying to make sense of something I know nothing about and I decided to just listen (hey I was desperate) so I did the following. Go to START (that's the windows icon on the bottom left of your screen) 2.

In the dialogue box type CMD and hit enter. A black and white box will come up. Type ipconfig/release and then hit Enter.

(you will see information/text message appear) 4. Then immediately where the cursor stops type ipconfig/renew and hit enter Ok here is where I got lost because the first time I did that I got a message saying 'no operation can be performed on wireless network while it has its media disconnected.' And I thought ok well that didn't work. I left it alone and went on to other stuff.because the board I was reading didn't give further info. But then I came across the same suggestion again tonight and I tried it again with same result.

EXCEPT then I decided well it's saying it doesn't have a wireless connection (and I'm thinking of course it doesn't idiot!) so what now? Well then I decided to connect my laptop to the internet with the Ethernet cable.

Remember those? Lucky I had a spare to connect with.

If you don't just disconnect it from your desktop and connect it to your laptop. I went through all the same steps as above (1-6). Just to be on the safe side. Then I connected my Ethernet cable and followed the next steps 1-4. This time it gave me a different message.

It provided an isp address and a bunch of other stuff I didn't understand. Didn't write it down. But it was different than the one before. I closed out the box and I then went to the list of available networks I selected mine and the dreaded password box came up. I entered my same password I have been using for years and throughout this whole ordeal but this time it immediately connected! I know people have different issues and different fixes- this is the one that worked for me. I definitely think it was an IP address issue.

And again not sure why since I didn't connect anything new or change anything. But hey who cares. It worked:) I hope this helps someone. I tried all the tricks proposed and THIS finally worked. Solution summary: 1.

Connect another laptop to wireless network, computer which is more up-to-date than the one that does not connect 2. Select the network connection in the computer that can connect. Right click, properties, connection tab, copy this network profile to UBS flash drive 3. Connect UBS flash drive to computer which cannot connect. Wait until options from flash drive appear. Select copy network connection profile to computer IT WORKS.

An amendment. This applies to both Win7 and Vista; I have no boxes with newer OSs to check win8/win10. I have quite a lengthy key with WPA2-AES config. Most of my devices (phones, raspberry, linux box) have no problem logging to my wifi.

However windows often had issues here, refusing to connect or stalling at 'no internet connectivity'. Scenario 1: I configure connect fresh system to my wifi (say 'HomeWifi') Scenario 2: Even if I get this connection working (how - explained later), after I go to any other wifi connection - work wifi / phone tether / hotspot - then I cannot reconnect to HomeWifi. Findings: What I've recently discovered is that security key displayed in 'wireless network properties' gets trimmed to 32 characters. While such behavior would be expected for SSID (this length limit is stated here and there); I have found no indication that 32-char limit would apply to wifi password as well.

It must be somewhere between 'where windows stores password' and this particular window (wireless network properties). Now the amazing part. when I enter correct long password in 'manage wireless connectons' or 'connect' or 'network connections' or 'Intel Proset' or lenovo's counterpart - it cannot connect. when I open 'Wireless network properties', show password, and type these missing final characters, it connects like a charm. Even after reboot. Until I connect to different wifi.

(see scenario 2) I have not found any trace of reports on this problem, but shortening wifi key/pass to 32 characters or less may be also a part of solution. I know this thread is a few years old but I need to post in order to help anyone who ends up experiencing this frustrating problem.

For me it happened after a power outage. My laptop (WIN 10) and iPhone had no problems connecting to the router and the internet, but my PC running WIN 7 kept getting a mismatch error. I have tried all of the solutions suggested here to no avail. Sometimes after rebooting my router (Seagate HUB 2000) I was able to connect but not get access to the internet itself for some reason.

I even set up a network with no security which allowed me to connect to the router but still no access to the internet. Likes others online it took me a week to fix this! My solution will not make much sense but here it is: (perhaps someone can explain why it worked) I remembered I had an old D-Link USB wifi adapter and thinking that even though my broadband WLAN adapter was seeing other networks, there was perhaps something ultimately wrong with it, I decided to install the D-Link USB Wi-Fi adapter to see if I could get internet access with it. I did not do as I found out later, install the driver off the D-Link CD but rather just plugged in the adapter to one of my USB ports at which point the WIN 7 OS automatically installed drivers for it. Remember I had already gone through one of the solutions where i unisntalled and reinstalled my internal wifi adapter to no avail. Before I had a chance to uninstall the internal adapter which is what the D-Link instructs to do before installing the D-Link adapter, I noticed that my network was still on the list of avail networks at which point I decided to try connecting to for the hell of it. It asked for a PIN, I selected use security key option, entered my network password expecting to get the 'Network Security Key Mismatch' error message again, but the error message never came!

I got a connection icon up on my screen (bottom right side) and my control panel showed that I had access to the internet! I loaded some youtub videos and everything was working no problem!!

Somehow the process corrected something. I'm thankful I did not uninstall the internal adapter beforehand or I might have missed the fact that it was able to work again! Lol I hope this adds to the list of possible solutions or at least provides some insight that might help. Even though it took me installing another adapter to fix this, perhaps reinstalling your current adapter once or twice may be good enough for you.
